Lost in Austen: A Review

In my recent expeditions to have as much Jane Austen related things around me, I've been viewing most of her novels made into movies. The ones adapted from Pride and Prejudice hold a particular place of importance as usual. And so, the other day, as I sat there, twiddling my thumbs, wondering what to view next when the TV series Lost in Austen caught my attention.

For those who're wondering what it's all about, let me explain. The story portrays a 21st century bank employee who's an avid Austen fanatic. She dreams of the world of the Regency era and yearns for an escape from the mundane things in her life. And as predictable as it gets, her prayers are answered. One day, she finds none other than Elizabeth Bennet in her bathroom and discovers that here's a hidden portal behind the plumbing that connects her world with that of Elizabeth's. And they decide to swap places. Up until this point, I was all in anticipation. But I should say... the moment she went into the other world, things started going a bit downhill for me.

For starters, she most decidedly wants to maintain the flow of the story but takes really drastic measures with no consideration for the times she's in to achieve what she desires. For a fanatic of Austen as the character is claimed to be, one would expect her to be aware of the ways in which things were dealt with in the time period of Austen's heroines. But nay! She acts brash and spunky and in her decided fashion of doing things, ends up complicating things more than they ought to be complicated.

For starters, why would she snog Bingley when she so righteously has taken it upon herself to actually bring him and Jane together? And then claim to be a lesbian to get away from him! I am sure there must have been another simpler way in which she could have achieved that and not alienate herself from half the population of the book. Any person with a grain of common sense would realize that the very act of being in a place where you aren't supposed to be alters that time and space. Ah... I guess I'm nit picking too much into the play now!

But there were good points as well. The characters of Austen's world for example. I am impressed with the way the story explores the unsaid assumptions that Austen left to her readers to ponder over. Wickham was one such character that I'm impressed with. Oh, and Mr. Collins. If I'd disliked him in the books, I positively loathe the one Lost in Austen portrays. Ugh... spending a lifetime in a monastery would be infinitely better than being married to that specimen! And it broke my heart to see his presence in the plot for more than what he merited in the books! And Darcy! Darling wonderful silly Darcy! I believe Elliot Cowan has done a wonderful job of usurping Collin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen to covet the title of my favorite portrayal of Darcy. Sigh... Too bad Amanda Price ends up looking like a swooning fan-girl everytime Darcy does something romantic. Yes, I understand resisting that man is futile. But, girl! One need not wear their hearts on their sleeves!

But all that said and done, I should say I enjoyed watching Lost in Austen for most of its duration and if you're a die hard Austen fan, you'd do well to pick this one up on rental. And for those who're hopeless romantics (or closet romantics like me), you could invest in a purchase as Mr.Darcy's passionate proclamations of love could melt frozen chocolate half a mile away!

Inuyasha....it's farewell, isn't it?

I saw the final episode of Inuyasha today... It was nice... Well... sort of... I guess I'm still recovering from the fact that it is actually over!
*sigh* What a weird world we live in and how much weirder are the ones who inhabit it! I'm actually depressed about a show being over! Sheesh! Right... Just so you know, I hope they make another movie out of it but then again, I guess it would be like spreading too little butter on too much bread. I should just let things be...

And speaking of letting things be, am I the only one who actually felt sorry for Naraku? Seriously... All the guy wanted was to be loved by Kikyo. Sure, any girl who's at the recieving end of his affection isn't exactly going to be in a "traditional" relationship of sorts! (Imagine your guy falling apart once a month and then pulling himself together... quite literally!) Poor dude... he just wanted something that simple and instead of just asking nicely, he decided "Kill Kill faster! Faster!" was the only way out!

Aaaaaaanyway, I'm really sad and in a funk that the show is finally over but hey! Maybe, I'll watch it again... The Internet is a wonderful place afterall! But still... It's not going to be the same knowing that it's all over. Rumiko Takahashi-sama! Please write some other story with the same characters! Maybe how Inu no Taisho met Izayoi... their love story... or.. or... Sesshomaru's love story... wait... that's not good! That would mean I can't fantasize! Ahem... Anyway, Please Takahashi-sama! Onegaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~i!!!

Alrighty, enough sadness and despair! As the wise often quoth,

So, onto further tales and good ones retold!

Fare thee well, Bellflower!

Today, I watched Kikyo from Inuyasha die. I've known her fate for quite some time now. But still... It was a little sad. Hmmmm... For all those people out there who were always bashing her and calling her the most demeaning names, let it rest now... In the end, she died so others might live. As far as I am concerned, she's one amazing character with layers that very few anime characters possess.

Rest in peace, Kikyo.

P.S. If you didn't already know, Kikyo in Japanese means Bellflower.

P.P.S. If you've not noticed already, I share my screen name with her and am darn proud of it! :D

And now, news from the other side!

Am I the only person who seems to think it really weird calling pets one's personal property? I mean, here's this guy who sets his puppy on fire, beats it and leaves it for dead and all he gets is a slap on the wrist and that too for setting personal property on fire! I mean.... come on! That's a live creature we're talking about! What of the dignity and rights that a living being is deigned to possess? What of the liability of taking something as precious and irreplaceable as a life? Don't any of those things matter anymore? Well... on the plus side, the Law in North Carolina has been made a bit more stringent. But even then, shouldn't animals be more than just personal property?

Hmmph! Like people give a damn anyway, right?

In other news, one of my cousins has gotten through JNCASR's Integrated PhD programmes for Microbiology and this was all that took to have my mother tell me how much of a failure I shall be, having gotten through nowhere. She seems to feel for not having gone for a second child now. Something about the second one doing everything I didn't. Yeah, it hurt. But like that matters anymore! And so, I hope you guys have an awesome weekend as I spend mine in obscurity within my own house! D: Right now, Tsuyoshi and Tsume happen to be the only people who seem happy seeing me around. There, I said people.... not property! :D

And so... it happens.... or not!

And so, the verdict is out.... IISc and NCBS have denied me access to their Labs. And so, here I stand; twenty three, moderately educated, completely useless! *sigh*

Hmmm.... this is quite interesting.... not knowing what's going to happen next!
